Technology

Built for the way dialects are written and spoken.

Most language models learn from standard, edited text. People don't write or talk to each other that way. Lebanese.ai is a language model for low-resource dialects, in text and in audio: it understands a dialect as people really type it or say it, then answers in the form you need, even in three languages within the same sentence.

The problem

One dialect, many forms.

The same Lebanese sentence reaches a business typed three different ways, or spoken, often inside one conversation.

شو عم تعمل؟

Arabic script, in dialect

Lebanese words in Arabic letters. Close to Arabic on the page, far from the Arabic most models learned.

shu 3am ta3mel?

Arabizi

Latin letters, with numbers standing in for sounds Latin can't write.

Code-switching

English and French move in and out of the same sentence. The model follows the switch instead of breaking on it, and it can talk the same way: Arabic, English and French in one sentence.

Spoken dialect

Lebanese.ai works on audio as well as text: it understands spoken dialect and answers out loud, in dialect.

How it works

Four steps from what was said to what was meant.

  1. Step 1

    Dialect input

Text or audio arrives as people type it or say it: Arabic script, Arabizi, a mix, or speech.

  2. Step 2

    Normalisation

Spellings, scripts and sounds are mapped to one form the model can reason over.

    3am→عم
  3. Step 3

    Dialect memory

The model applies what it knows about how the dialect is really used.

    dialectcontext
  4. Step 4

    Output

The answer comes back in dialect, Modern Standard Arabic, English or French, or in all three languages mixed in one sentence.

Hear it

It speaks Lebanese, too.

Two real recordings from a Lebanese.ai voice assistant taking a shop order. Listen for how it moves between Lebanese and English in the same sentence, the way people here actually talk.

Okay، بدّك ٣ تي شيرتات size medium، بس عم لخّصلك طلبك وما رح أعمل طلبية.

“Okay, you want 3 T-shirts, size medium. I’m just summarising your order, I won’t place it yet.”
